Route Five

A creative way of solving a problem

This is called McFall’s Mystical Monitor, & it’s a pity I can’t remember who McFall was. I also don’t quite know why it works, but it does.

Can you hear what you’re saying? I’ve noticed that one of the reasons people come to talk to me is so that they can hear themselves properly. "How do I know what I think till I see what I say?", as my old friend Gordon Moore used to say. And this rather unusual process may let you see what you say, and find out what you really think, without having to talk to anyone else. You need an audio tape recorder, a single C90 tape, and a private place, so that you can talk to yourself without chaps in white coats coming to take you away.
A promise Promise yourself that you’ll wipe the tape at the end of this activity (It helps to know that it can’t ever "be given in evidence against you")
Make a start
bulletFind your private place & settle down (perhaps with some medicinal alcohol?)
bulletNote the time & start the tape; keep it running for ten minutes.
bulletSay whatever you like about the issue that’s concerning you.
bulletIt’ll be hard to get started: you feel embarrassed, you don’t know what to say, the whole thing seems silly & pointless, and so on ... Just do it!
bulletKeep the tape running for the ten minutes & say whatever you can.
Get below the surface
bulletStop the tape, rewind it, play through what you’ve recorded. You’re the only listener, so it doesn’t matter if some of it sounds a bit silly.
bulletAs soon as it stops, press "Record" and start talking about things you might be able to do so as to move forward.
bulletRecord at least another ten minutes of this.
bulletStop & rewind the tape but don’t listen to it for at least a week.
Make it happen
bulletAfter at least a week, listen to the tape, then rewind it to the start and talk for as long as necessary about what you’re now going to do.
bulletRewind & listen to this last recording.
bulletRewind again & fulfil your promise by wiping the tape.
bulletGet on with what you’ve now planned to do

           Good luck!
