Route Three

Seven possible strategies for really nasty problems

Change the situation Change things physically - equipment, processes, procedures

This is a very logical approach which can be useful. However, it may not work if you, and others, have strong feelings about what's happening.

Change other people Persuade the people involved to behave in a different way

You may need to learn the skills & tactics that will actually persuade other people to change (if you had them already then there probably wouldn't be a problem!)

Leave the situation Move on from the unsatisfactory situation - perhaps get promoted?

Make sure that you're going to something better and not just away from something you don't like.

Change yourself Learn to behave in a different way that gets better results

You'll need to learn new skills & techniques again, so this one can feel a bit threatening - but developing your abilities is a good way to take charge of your life.

Change how you see it Find a new way to look at the situation so it no longer seems wrong

This sounds impossible at first thought, but can be a good answer. People can, and do, change their attitudes - they choose a new way to see things instead of being stuck with ideas that aren't helping them.

Put up with it Hope that things will improve if you give them enough time

If you don't like confrontations or aren't feeling confident then this is a tempting strategy, but it's often the worst option - you'll probably still get nasty things done to you!

Talk it through This means sharing your ideas with a neutral helper

Somebody who can listen to you, accept what you say & keep it confidential.  And who will help you talk it through so you can work out what you really want to do
